It’s been on my heart for a while to address the topic of manipulation and control. Yes, a very interesting topic that many ministers avoid speaking or teaching on. I believe God is pulling the covers off of this cancer that has destroyed many lives over the years. To be honest, we can find manipulation and control resting in our own lives if we’re willing to take a closer look at our relationships. Some of us may not recognize it right away so let me help you out. As wives, we pout and withhold affection when we don’t get our way. As friends, we try to place guilt on the other when we need help or assistance. As ministers, we use our roles and status in the church and the community to further a personal agenda.
Then there are those who the devil has sent into your lives to totally “jack-up” your mind! Do you hear me? The devil wants to get you so far off course, and if he and his demon spirits can wreck havoc in your lives they will…by any means necessary! So I feel the urgency to address this before a life is destroyed, but please understand, not all manipulation and control is evil. Most parents know that children need someone to control them and teach them self-control, to discipline them and teach them self-discipline. Any employer knows new employees or young ones who have not been long in the work force must be motivated and directed. These are healthy if done with the correct intent. We will set that style of manipulation and control to the side today. My intent is to address the negative form of manipulation and control.
Make note that the first form of manipulation and control was done by Lucifer. We reference in Genesis how he really wanted to be God, and he tried his best to persuade the other angels to join his team and pursue his vision and mission. Even after his attempt failed, he went on to manipulate Eve, and his tactics have gotten even more creative over the years.
To help you understand and guard yourself against being manipulated let’s take a look at what the Bible says.
Matthew 7:15 – Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are raving wolves.
2 Timothy 3:1-5 – But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
Hebrews: 13: 8,9 – Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For [it is] a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.
Matthew 23: 3-5 – All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, [that] observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay [them] on men’s shoulders; but they [themselves] will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
Psalm 54:3 – For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah.
How should you deal with controlling spirits? We need to realize that there is a difference between one with a take charge ability and one with a controlling spirit. They are not the same thing. Many godly people are qualified people who know how to motivate others to work, and how to get things done. Now Jezebel was an evil controlling spirit. The spirit of control always wants to dominate and manipulate, and control other people and situations. It’s an oppressive spirit.
Hosea 12:7 – He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress. It’s a warning. This man loves to control.
Isaiah 3:12-14 – As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths. The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people. The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.
Psalm 72:4 – He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.
Proverbs 3:31-32 – Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways. For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.
Proverbs 28:16 – The prince that wanteth understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.
Isaiah 14:4-5 – That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased! The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers.
Isaiah 51:11-13 – Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away. I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass; And forgettest the LORD thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?
Jeremiah 22:3 – Thus saith the LORD; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.
If you are under a controlling or oppressive spirit, either directly or indirectly through another person, God’s word for you is that you must let God fight the battle for you, and fight it by the spirit and not in the flesh.
Exodus 14:14 -The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
Deuteronomy 3:22 – Ye shall not fear them: for the LORD your God he shall fight for you.
Psalm 35:1-4, 22-23. Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me. Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help. Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against them that persecute me: say unto my soul, I am thy salvation. Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt… This thou hast seen, O LORD: keep not silence: O LORD, be not far from me. Stir up thyself, and awake to my judgment, even unto my cause, my God and my Lord.
If you are the manipulator or controller, ask God for forgivness. Let Him cleanse your heart and mind. If you are the person being manipulated or controlled, feed your spirit the Word of God, and stand firm on what God has already told you. Don’t be easly persuaed. Ask for the spirit of discernment, and God will equipt you to stand against evil.
I speak FREEDOM FROM BONDAGE, in the Name of Jesus! Have a blessed day!
